The Conjuring is an astounding piece of work, and while its at the top of this list, it should be among the greatest horror films of all time. Hopefully with this review, I can explain why that is. I hated the Blair Witch Project. Hated it. So it seems like a cosmic joke that that lamentable film was a huge success that changed horror films forever and Lovely Molly was unceremoniously dumped and forgotten. The Blair Witch Project was underwritten, frustrating ambiguous and meandering. Lovely Molly is the film where Eduardo Sanchez got the formula right. The Conspiracy (from writer/director Christopher MacBride) is so effective that some people think it tells a greater truth. It taps into the very real fear that the game of life is actually rigged. When writer/director Elliot Goldner’s movie, The Borderlands ended, I sat there in stunned silence for about a minute. I’d heard this was a phenomenal film, but for most of its run, I found it pleasant but I didn’t understand the praise. I always talk about the idea of being ‘in front’ of the audience as opposed to being ‘behind’ an audience. Some movies are inherently flawed, because it takes them an hour to get to where the audience already is. When you go to watch the Spiderman reboot, you already know that Peter Parker gets powers and becomes Spiderman. The Tunnel is an Australian film presented as a documentary. I tend to like documentary and found footage films because when done properly, the audience accepts them as almost real. In The Tunnel, Natasha, a determined reporter, decides to investigate why the government abruptly abandoned its plan to recycle water trapped in underground springs in old train tunnels beneath New South Wales.
